I recently read an interesting article which compared “Shoot & Burn Photographers” vs Professional Printing. Reading through the article the responses were quite mixed… the article pointed out that by giving away your digital negatives you were not only losing control over your photos but you were also losing income.
The author suggested if people had to have digital files you provide them with low resolution files they can use on Facebook, Twitter etc or for emailing purposes and thus they would have to come to you for all of their prints.
So here is my feel on it and why I have chosen to offer what I have…
I offer my clients the edited digital files – why – simply because as a parent, especially as a mom, I personally would want the digital files myself to have for online use, emailing to family or for use in a scrapbook etc (digital scrapbook or digital photo albums). I feel that even if you offer low resolution digital images, the client is still going to use these images and in turn if they printed larger than the low res file size, the photo is going to look horrible.
However, although I provide my clients with the edited digital files, I highly recommend professional printing for larger than 4×6 or 5×7 prints. After all these prints are going to be Art for your home…
I am pleased to offer my clients :
- Professional Prints
- Float Wraps – A mounting option which includes photos which are professionally printed and made to appear that they are floating on the wall – the image is also raised slightly with foam inserted between the image and the back.
- Standout Prints – The image is mounted on a hard surface and is a “standout” from the wall approximately 3/4″. The trim around the image (on the side of the frame – image is on the front) is typically in black, however can be in another option at extra charge).
- Canvas Prints – This is a timelessly classic way to display images within the home. The image is printed on a canvas and wrapped around a wood frame.
